Price Daniel Unit is part of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Correctional Institutions Division. It is not operated by the Scurry County Sheriff. A prisoner may move to another TDCJ unit while remaining confined, leave prison on parole or mandatory supervision while remaining under legal supervision, or receive a full discharge when the identified sentence ends.

Scurry’s Two Custody Systems

Price Daniel Unit places an 880-capacity state prison within Scurry County, creating a two-system problem uncommon in many small counties. The official Daniel Unit directory establishes its TDCJ identity. The county jail at 400 37th Street handles local pretrial detention and county commitments; Daniel Unit holds sentenced state prisoners.

Departure from Daniel Unit could be transfer, parole, mandatory supervision, or discharge. Only statewide TDCJ status can distinguish them. Conversely, release on bond from Scurry County Jail does not create a TDCJ record just because it happened in the same county. Start with the custodian that actually held the person, then follow a named transfer.

Read TDCJ Release Dates

“Projected release date” is the date Classification and Records estimates the person will leave incarceration if not paroled sooner. It can change with classification, jail credit, good-time earning class, forfeiture or restoration, new judgments, sentence stacking, holds, and Board action. “Parole eligibility date” is a threshold for review, not a promised exit. “Maximum sentence date” is the computed end of the sentence held by TDCJ.

There is no universal Texas 85-percent release rule. Government Code Chapters 498 and 508 contain offense, date, sentence, and eligibility rules. Good-conduct time is a privilege and affects parole or mandatory-supervision eligibility as the law provides; it does not simply shorten every judicial sentence. Quote the official date label and access date rather than calculating a new date from an online summary.

Daniel Parole Versus Discharge

Parole is conditional release from prison under TDCJ Parole Division supervision after a Board decision. Mandatory supervision is another statutory form of supervised release. Neither is full discharge. A favorable Board vote is also not physical release: programs, residence approval, detainers, and processing may remain. Confirm actual departure through the post-vote line or release history, then use Post-Release Supervision for the supervising office.

Full discharge means the identified TDCJ term ended without a remaining parole or mandatory-supervision portion. Unrelated obligations may still exist. Ask TDCJ for the release date, release type, incarceration history, sentence, cause, and conviction county. Do not infer discharge from an empty current-unit field.

TDCJ may redact information under Texas law, and a request must seek existing records rather than require a new analysis.
